Kurnool opens two sites for Ganesh idol immersion ceremonies

The Kurnool administration has readied the Handri-Neeva canal near Nannur toll gate and the Vinayaka Ghat on the K-C Canal for devotees to immerse Ganesh idols, with more than 350 idols already immersed at the Handri-Neeva site.

Industries and Commerce Minister and Kurnool MLA T.G. Bharath Gupta said all necessary arrangements are being made at both locations to conduct the Ganesh idol immersion ceremonies. The Handri-Neeva site near Nannur toll gate is suitable for immersion of big sized Ganesh idols, he added.

Water storage at Vinayaka Ghat

At the Vinayaka Ghat, walls have been constructed on both sides of the K-C Canal to create a tank-like structure for water storage. Approximately 20 lakh liters of wash water discharged daily from the pump house are being stored at Vinayaka Ghat to facilitate the traditional immersion of idols by devotees, Mr. Bharath explained.

Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC) Commissioner Challa Obulesu said that after assessing feasibility, measures were taken to divert wash water generated during the purification process at the Ashok Nagar Pump House to the K-C Canal Vinayaka Ghat. Barriers were constructed to store this water over a stretch of 600 meters for immersion of idols, he said.

Change from initial plan

With the non-availability of water in Sunkesula barrage upstream, the administration had asked the pandal organisers not to install big Plaster of Paris idols earlier. However, with the request of the Ganesh Mahotsav Central Committee, measures have been taken to conduct the immersion at the Vinayaka Ghat on the K-C Canal.

The Minister inspected the immersion arrangements at both the Handri-Neeva site near Nannur Toll Gate and the Vinayaka Ghat. He said devotees could perform the Ganesh immersion at locations convenient to them.

Officials from the Irrigation Department and the Kurnool Municipal Corporation are coordinating to make comprehensive arrangements for the smooth conduct of the immersion, Mr. Bharath added. Representatives from the Gayatri Goseva Samiti have come forward to assist the devotees, he said.
