Kolkata to Attempt Guinness Record with 500 Boats for Yoga Day 2026
Kolkata aims to set a Guinness World Record with 500 boats for Yoga Day 2026, celebrating yoga's heritage along the Hooghly River.
Kolkata is preparing for a landmark celebration in June 2026, with plans to host a spectacular event along the Hooghly River to mark West Bengal Day on June 20 and the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21. The programme, jointly organised by the Centre and the state government, aims to set a new Guinness World Record and showcase the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari hailed the event as a "Homecoming of Yoga," emphasizing Kolkata's historical significance as the spiritual and yoga capital of India. He noted that many legendary yogis originated from the city, contributing to the global evolution of yoga. Adhikari also highlighted the lack of emphasis on IDY celebrations under the previous state government and expressed pride in hosting the national celebrations for IDY 2026.
The festivities will span three days, beginning on June 20 with 'Vande Yoga,' a spiritual carnival along the banks of the Hooghly starting at 5:30 pm. On June 21, the highlight will be a breathtaking attempt to set a Guinness World Record with 500 boats synchronised in yoga postures on the river. The celebrations will culminate at 8:00 pm with a mega drone light show featuring 3,000 drones above the iconic Howrah Bridge and Second Hooghly Bridge, narrating cultural and mythological stories through intricate displays.
Public vantage points for the event include Millennium Park, Babughat, and Belur Math, which will host cultural shows, food stalls, sand art displays, laser shows, and a 'Paint It, Click It' photography competition. Yoga sessions will also be held across prominent city landmarks such as Elliot Park, The 42, and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) headquarters. The celebrations will kick off on June 19 with a 2-km 'Run for Yoga' marathon across 11 key locations.
The main segment of the marathon will be flagged off by the Chief Minister at 7 am from the KMC headquarters and will conclude at the historic Writers’ Building. On June 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the grand Yoga Day session on Red Road, accompanied by Adhikari. Gates will open to the public at 5 am, with the main session starting at 6:45 am.
To ensure wider participation, LED screens will be installed at 45 major traffic intersections across Kolkata for live broadcasting of the event. KMC administrator Smita Pandey stated that the city is being prepared to welcome the Prime Minister in a clean and eco-friendly manner under the Swachh Bharat initiative. Adhikari urged citizens to join local cleanliness drives in anticipation of the historic weekend.
