Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has called on the Union government and the Coconut Development Board to back the creation of a Coconut Value-Addition Park in Keralam, a move aimed at modernising the sector and boosting farmer incomes.
Satheesan made the appeal while addressing World Coconut Day celebrations organised by the Coconut Development Board. He stressed the importance of moving coconut cultivation away from traditional practices toward scientific and planned plantation models. "It is important that productivity is increased through scientific management and effective disease control," he added.
Push for rejuvenation plan
Agriculture Minister T. Siddique, who presided over the event, announced the government's intention to roll out a 'Coconut Rejuvenation Plan' in partnership with the Union government and the Coconut Development Board.
The Agriculture Department will submit a ₹500 crore project proposal to the Coconut Development Board covering the entire spectrum of coconut farming, from production of planting material to marketing, Siddique said. In the first phase, activities will be undertaken with ₹500 crore as the board's contribution and ₹41 crore from the State government, he added.
The twin initiatives, the value-addition park and the rejuvenation plan, signal a comprehensive push to overhaul Keralam's coconut economy, which has long relied on conventional farming methods.
