Racism Exists Everywhere, But Multiculturalism Thrives in Australia: Minister Julian Hill

Australia’s Assistant Minister for International Education, Citizenship, Customs and Multicultural Affairs, Julian Hill, has acknowledged the presence of racism in Australia but stressed that such sentiments are limited to a small minority. Hill’s remarks come in the wake of anti-immigration protests across several Australian cities that specifically targeted Indian immigrants.

Speaking about the protests, dubbed the ‘March for Australia,’ which took place in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth, and other cities, Hill said, “The truth is, in every human society on the planet, there are a small percentage of people who express racist sentiments. It happens here in India, it happens in every country in the world. They are scared of people who are different.”

Majority of Australians Embrace Multiculturalism

Hill was quick to clarify that these protests do not represent the views of most Australians. Citing surveys, he said, “The sentiments you’re talking about don’t represent the vast majority of Australians. Most Australians cherish a multicultural character.”

He described Australia as “the world’s most successful multicultural democracy,” highlighting the country’s long history of welcoming people from diverse backgrounds, including a significant Indian diaspora. Many Australians of Indian heritage, including Telugu speakers in southeast Melbourne, have made the country their home.

Australia Remains a Safe Destination for Indian Students

In a message aimed at Indian students and professionals, Hill reassured them of Australia’s safety and inclusivity. “I’d say to young Indians, genuine, high-quality students who are exploring international study, that Australia is safe. It’s welcoming. And we know from the surveys and the research that we do that overwhelmingly, people have a good experience,” he said.

Hill also noted that while many students return to India after their studies, they carry back valuable skills and premium education to advance their careers.

Immigration Policy Adjustments After COVID-19

The Minister also addressed concerns about immigration levels, noting that Australia’s net overseas migration had surged after the country reopened its borders following the COVID-19 pandemic. This sharp rise, he said, was due to policies inherited from the previous government.

“Our government was elected in 2022, and we’ve said very clearly that net overseas migration rose too fast with the policy settings that we inherited. And so we’ve changed some of those things to bring net overseas migration down,” Hill explained.

However, he emphasized that temporary visitors, including students, tourists, and those visiting family, are still welcome if they meet visa requirements. He clarified that such temporary entrants are not counted as permanent migrants.

Strengthening India-Australia Ties

Hill’s visit to India included participating in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Andhra Pradesh and Australia. The agreement focuses on collaboration in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, inclusive education, student mental health, and skill development.

The Minister’s comments and initiatives underscore Australia’s commitment to fostering multiculturalism while addressing concerns about immigration and ensuring the safety and inclusivity of its diverse population.
