Children with Disabilities Should Focus on Strengths, Says Judge at Legal Awareness Seminar

GUNTUR: Principal District and Sessions Judge B. Sai Kalyan Chakravarthi has called on parents of children with disabilities to nurture their talents and encourage them to excel with confidence, rather than focusing on their limitations. He made these remarks on Saturday while inaugurating a legal awareness seminar organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Guntur.

Focus on Legal Support and Empowerment

The seminar, held as part of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and State Legal Services Authority’s annual calendar, was conducted in collaboration with the Department for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities, Transgenders, and Senior Citizens. It centred on the NALSA Legal Services Scheme for Persons with Mental Illness and Disabilities, 2015, and the recently introduced NALSA Legal Services Scheme for Persons with Mental Illness and Intellectual Disabilities, 2024.

DLSA secretary Syed Ziyauddin coordinated the event, which also highlighted the authority’s commitment to spreading legal awareness, providing free legal aid, and promoting speedy dispute resolution through Lok Adalats. Judge Chakravarthi emphasised the importance of identifying the unique strengths of children with disabilities, urging parents to support their growth and confidence.

Practical Support for Beneficiaries

During the event, essential aids such as hearing aids, wheelchairs, and tricycles were distributed to beneficiaries by the Principal District Judge. Additionally, a week-long mediation awareness campaign was launched to encourage litigants to resolve disputes amicably and efficiently through mediation.

Judges Stress Government Support

First Additional District Judge V.A.L. Satyavathi and Family Court Judge Sheikh Sikander Basha underscored the necessity of ensuring that eligible children with disabilities receive government financial assistance and essential aids. They reiterated that children with disabilities should never be underestimated, as they can achieve remarkable success with the right support and encouragement.

The seminar also provided an opportunity to spotlight various NALSA welfare schemes designed to protect the rights of vulnerable groups and enhance access to justice.

This initiative underscores the importance of empowering children with disabilities by leveraging their strengths and ensuring they receive the support they need to thrive.
