HSBC sells $25 billion Australian home loan portfolio to Blackstone

HSBC has announced the sale of its Australian home loan portfolio, valued at $25 billion, to private equity giant Blackstone. The transaction, based on the portfolio’s value as of January-end, will result in a loss of less than $100 million for the bank. The remaining retail operations of HSBC Australia will be wound down over the next 18 months. The proceeds from the sale will be allocated to the bank’s broader corporate purposes.

Part of HSBC’s Global Simplification Strategy

The move follows a strategic review of HSBC Australia’s retail business and aligns with the bank’s ongoing efforts to streamline its global operations. “The disposal follows a strategic review of HSBC Australia’s retail business and forms part of the ongoing simplification of the HSBC Group,” the bank stated.

Despite the exit from retail banking in Australia, HSBC emphasized its continued commitment to corporate and institutional banking in the region. The bank plans to consolidate its corporate banking, private banking, and asset management operations into the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Sydney branch.

Restructuring Costs and Long-Term Financial Impact

The restructuring will come at a cost. HSBC estimates $300 million in restructuring expenses and write-offs. Additionally, the recycling of foreign exchange reserve losses is projected to total $300 million by 2028.

This strategic shift underscores HSBC’s focus on its core strengths in corporate and institutional banking, while scaling back less profitable retail operations. The sale to Blackstone marks a significant reshaping of the bank’s Australian presence.
