Bordeaux officials hail exclusive 5-year deal for Hong Kong to host Vinexpo
Vinexpo’s Asian edition will be hosted solely by Hong Kong from 2027 to 2031 under a deal signed by the international wine and spirits trade exhibition.
The agreement gives Hong Kong the exclusive hosting role for the Asian edition during that period.
Vinexpo is a premier international wine and spirits trade exhibition that began in Bordeaux.
The deal was announced as Bordeaux officials stressed the importance of maintaining a presence in Hong Kong and elsewhere in China.
“Having a presence in Hong Kong and the rest of China is ‘very important’ for Bordeaux,” an official from the French wine-producing region said.
Deputy mayor Fabien Robert said Hong Kong and Bordeaux “have a long story in the past and we have a long future”.
Robert’s comments came as Vinexpo signed the agreement for Hong Kong to host its Asian edition solely from 2027 to 2031.
He said the arrangement sent a message about Bordeaux’s continued seriousness in Asia and China.
“To be in Hong Kong every year, I think it’s a message ... [to] Asia and China about the seriousness of Bordeaux wine,” Robert said.
He added: “We are in Asia, we are in China, in Hong Kong, and this is very important for Bordeaux.”
Robert made the remarks in an exclusive interview with the South China Morning Post on Friday.
The focus on Hong Kong comes even as wine consumption declines on the mainland, according to the report.
For Bordeaux, the hosting agreement links the region’s wine trade presence in Hong Kong with its wider engagement in Asia and China.
