Hong Kong's Mega-Events Draw 1.75 Million Visitors, Boost Economy

Mega-Events Generate HK$5.8 Billion in Visitor Spending for Hong Kong in First Half of 2023: Paul Chan

Hong Kong's mega-events attracted over 1.75 million visitors and generated HK$5.8 billion (US$739 million) in spending during the first six months of 2023, according to Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po. Each visitor spent an average of HK$3,314, underscoring the city's appeal as a global hub for culture, arts, and sports.

Events Boost Economy and Retail Sales

In his weekly blog on Sunday, Chan highlighted the economic impact of more than 130 events held between January and June. These events not only brought in significant visitor spending but also contributed HK$3.3 billion in economic value added.

Chan noted that the vibrant schedule of art, cultural, and sporting events has invigorated the city's consumer demand. Retail sales, a key indicator of economic activity, have risen for 14 consecutive months, marking a 9.6% increase in the first half of the year.

Sporting Events Draw Global Crowds

Among the standout events were the Hong Kong Football Festival and the Audi Football Summit, held shortly after the FIFA World Cup. Together, these three matches attracted over 120,000 visitors and generated more than HK$180 million in ticket sales.

More Events Ahead in 2023

Looking ahead, Chan revealed that over 100 events are lined up for the second half of the year. Major highlights include the Food Expo, National Day fireworks, the Hong Kong Cyclothon, and the Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival.

The robust calendar of events underscores Hong Kong's status as an "event capital" and a key driver of economic activity through tourism and retail.
