Hong Kong positions itself as vital Belt and Road gateway amid geopolitical tensions

Hong Kong will continue serving as a gateway linking Belt and Road economies with mainland China and global markets, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu told the annual Belt and Road Summit, positioning the city as a crucial convergence point for capital, talent and businesses advancing the national initiative.

More than 60 government and business agreements and memorandums of understanding will be signed during the event, with the total value of projects and deals exceeding US$3 billion, Lee announced at the summit's opening.

A Two-Way Springboard for Global Trade

Lee described Hong Kong as a "two-way springboard" for mainland enterprises seeking to expand overseas and international companies looking to access the mainland market. The characterization underscores the city's unique position straddling Chinese and international business ecosystems at a time when geopolitical tensions have complicated cross-border commerce.

"In a world struggling with unprecedented change and geopolitical fragmentation, connectivity, cooperation, and consensus are essential. That's precisely what the Belt and Road Summit offers," Lee said.

The chief executive framed the Belt and Road Initiative as forward-looking rather than retrospective. "The Belt and Road Initiative is not a map of the past, but a shared blueprint for the future. And Hong Kong is where we realise that future: where East meets West, where capital, talent, businesses and opportunities converge," he said.

Capital-Raising Hub for Belt and Road Enterprises

Lee emphasized the city's role as a global gateway for Belt and Road businesses to raise capital, pointing to recent examples such as Kazakhstan's national railway company applying to list on the city's stock exchange. The listing application illustrates Hong Kong's appeal to state-owned enterprises from Belt and Road countries seeking access to international investors while maintaining strong ties to Chinese capital markets.
