Hong Kong Expects Emerging-Industry Firms To Set Up Within Months
Paul Chan says Hong Kong expects to close deals with leading emerging-sector firms within months, backed by preferential policy packages.
A handful of leading firms from emerging industries are expected to set up operations in Hong Kong within the “next couple of months”, Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po has said.
Preferential packages under discussion
Chan said the companies are expected to receive preferential policy packages as part of Hong Kong’s efforts to attract investment.
The finance chief said a cross-departmental committee was in “close discussions” with several firms over setting up operations in the city.
In an exclusive interview with the South China Morning Post, Chan provided an update on Hong Kong’s drive to draw international and national brands and strategic enterprises to establish business in the city.
That drive is being pursued through dedicated preferential arrangements, according to the interview.
“We are in close discussions with a few. We hope to conclude this as soon as possible and make the announcement. The target is in the next couple of months,” Chan said.
Strategic enterprises focus
The expected deals cover firms from strategic sectors and emerging industries, with the planned operations forming part of the city’s wider investment-attraction push.
The development matters because the finance chief linked the expected announcements directly to Hong Kong’s attempt to bring in international and national brands and strategic enterprises through targeted policy support.
