Google Maps shows Lake America to US users following Trump executive order

Google Maps has begun displaying "Lake America" to users in the United States after President Donald Trump issued an executive order renaming Lake Ontario, the technology company confirmed in a statement on Saturday.

The change applies only within US borders, Canadian users will continue to see "Lake Ontario," while those in other countries will see both names displayed on the mapping service. Google said the update follows its long-standing policy of deferring to official government naming systems for bodies of water whose names differ across jurisdictions.

Policy rooted in US geographic database

The company bases its US naming decisions on the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the federal repository of domestic place names. "These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now," Google stated.

The approach mirrors Google's response earlier in 2025 when Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico renamed the Gulf of America, which the company also implemented for US users.

Renaming comes amid trade war escalation

Trump signed the Lake Ontario renaming order on Thursday as tensions with Canada intensified over a bilateral trade dispute that has already resulted in billions of dollars in reciprocal tariffs on goods crossing the border. The geographic rebranding drew widespread mockery and indifference in both countries.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded on Saturday by erecting a billboard-sized sign on the Canadian shoreline that read: "Lake Ontario. Now and forever". Neither the White House, the office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, nor Ford's office had commented on Google's implementation of the name change by Sunday.
