AI Comes to Highways: NHAI Tool Flags Defects, Contradictions, and Dispute Risks

NEW DELHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a cutting-edge AI-powered tool named "Margsarthi," revolutionizing its workflow by enabling faster and more efficient decision-making. Tasks that previously took days can now be completed within minutes, thanks to this innovative technology.

Margsarthi, developed in-house by NHAI, is currently being utilized by over 1,000 officers to analyze discrepancies in contract documents, detailed project reports (DPRs), and minutes of meetings spanning hundreds of pages. The tool operates within a "gated garden" framework, ensuring it remains confined to NHAI's domain without accessing the open internet.

The AI tool is designed to flag provisions that could potentially lead to disputes or litigation and suggest corrective measures. Additionally, it identifies defects, faulty signage, and synthesizes insights from past arbitration cases and project delays using NHAI's extensive repository of documents. This functionality aims to streamline operations and reduce risks associated with highway projects.

Highlighting the rationale behind the tool's development, NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav explained that a workflow study conducted last year revealed the need for automation in tasks handled by project directors and regional officers. Many of these tasks could be efficiently managed using AI tools, prompting the creation of Margsarthi.

The tool also simplifies the process of highway inspections. Officials can now upload a photo of a highway, and the system will analyze it against hundreds of guidelines, codes, notifications, and specifications to provide results quickly. This feature further enhances the efficiency of highway monitoring and maintenance.
