Former Indian Royals Find New Roles Decades After Losing Their Thrones
Radhikaraje Gaekwad and India’s former royals adapt as business leaders, politicians and cultural ambassadors while preserving their royal heritage.
Radhikaraje Gaekwad, a queen in name only, is working as a modern businesswoman while preserving art accumulated by generations of rulers. Her experience reflects how India’s former royals have adapted after losing their thrones and found roles beyond the world their ancestors once ruled.
From palace to public role
Speaking at her vast Lakshmi Vilas Palace, the 48-year-old said former royals have taken on new roles, including work as cultural ambassadors and in politics. “The key has been that we have adapted,” Gaekwad said.
She said her work has always been to bring in change that she feels would be for the betterment of society. Her work also includes preserving art accumulated by generations of rulers.
The transition has wider political relevance because Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist government has sought to draw on a royal past outside foreign control to reinforce its national narrative. Gaekwad said, “A glimpse of what was left behind … can bring that sense of identity and pride back in their roots, and help them in the future.”
Her comments connect the preservation of inherited art with identity, pride in one’s roots and the future, while reflecting the adaptation she described.
