Deputy Commissioner announces ₹2,500 per acre relief for pulse crop losses in Belagavi

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan has announced interim compensation of ₹2,500 per acre for farmers who lost green gram and black gram crops across more than 29,000 hectares in Belagavi district.

The relief will cover cultivators in Yaragati, Savadatti and Ramdurg taluks, where officials have completed crop loss surveys and recommended declaring the areas drought-hit. The detailed report will be submitted to the state government within two days, Roshan told reporters in Belagavi on Monday.

Rainfall deficit in two more taluks

The assessment will also examine rainfall shortages in Athani and Kagwad taluks, the Deputy Commissioner said. The drought has particularly affected pulse growers who depend on adequate moisture during critical growth stages.

Cantonment merger proposal pending

On a separate administrative matter, Roshan confirmed the district has forwarded a proposal to merge 756 acres of Cantonment land into city corporation limits. The Urban Development Department Secretary has met with district officials to review the matter.

"Once the State Cabinet takes a decision on the issue, a proposal will be sent to the Ministry of Defence by the State government," he said.

The interim compensation aims to provide immediate cash support to affected farmers while the formal drought declaration process moves through government channels.
