Chinese schools deny students entry over hair policy violations

Two schools in northwestern China refused entry to students on the first day of term over non-compliant hairstyles, forcing parents to scramble for emergency haircuts outside the school gates.

Viral videos captured teachers stationed at the entrances of Yinchuan High School and Yinchuan No 24 Middle School on 23 August, the opening day of the new school term in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia Hui autonomous region. The footage showed several students denied entry for failing to meet hair regulations, with perplexed parents standing beside them.

Some parents resorted to making urgent phone calls for hair styling services at the school gate. Barbers responded by setting up makeshift stalls near the entrances to serve the stranded students, with reports indicating queues formed for their services.

Policy violates education law, says lawyer

The enforcement has drawn sharp legal criticism. A lawyer quoted by Jinyun News said the schools are violating national education law by infringing upon students' right to education over minor hairstyle issues. The comment highlights the legal tension between administrative control over student appearance and the fundamental right to schooling guaranteed under Chinese law.

The controversy reflects broader tensions over school discipline policies in China, where institutions often impose strict codes governing student appearance but face pushback when enforcement measures prevent access to education itself.
