In one of their largest single-day purchases this month, Chinese government buyers acquired at least 840,000 tonnes of US soybeans for shipment in October and November, according to US traders familiar with the deals. The transactions, finalized on Friday, include eight cargoes from Gulf Coast terminals and six cargoes from Pacific Northwest ports.

A Strategic Shift in Soybean Trade

This significant purchase marks a notable shift in China's buying patterns. After slowing imports of US soybeans for much of the past year due to trade tensions and cheaper supplies from Brazil, the world's top soybean importer resumed purchases from the US in late June. The renewed activity aligns with ongoing trade discussions between the two nations.

The White House recently disclosed that China had committed to buying 25 million tonnes of US soybeans annually, alongside other American farm goods. These agreements are seen as part of broader efforts to ease trade disputes ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's planned visit to Washington in late September for talks with US President Donald Trump.

Government Buyers Lead the Charge

Recent purchases by Chinese buyers have exceeded 3 million tonnes, with government entities driving the bulk of the deals. Commercial importers, who typically account for about two-thirds of US soybean exports to China, have continued sourcing beans from South America instead. Traders expect the trend of government-led acquisitions to persist in the coming weeks.

This development underscores the strategic importance of agricultural trade in US-China relations, particularly as both nations navigate economic and geopolitical challenges.
