China tells Mexico to shield ties from US pressure during Beijing talks

China has called for its relationship with Mexico to remain free from third-party interference, a pointed message delivered as reports circulate of American pressure on Mexico City over its Beijing ties.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Mexican counterpart Roberto Velasco Alvarez that "China-Mexico relations are not directed at any third party, nor should they be influenced by any third party". Wang pledged Chinese support for Mexico in maintaining its independence, safeguarding its sovereignty and security, and opposing external interference, according to the foreign ministry.

First visit since April appointment

Velasco, who took office in April, is making his first official visit to Beijing. He emphasized that both nations share respect for sovereignty and equality, according to the Chinese statement.

The Mexican foreign minister said his country was willing to strengthen high-level exchanges, advance bilateral mechanisms, and deepen pragmatic cooperation. "I hope that today we can identify new areas of understanding and cooperation between our nations, for the benefit of our people, and lay the foundations for a joint work agenda for the coming years," Velasco said, according to Mexico's N+ news agency.

The exchange follows reports that the United States has been pressuring Mexico over its relationship with China. Beijing's statement signals its intent to maintain and expand diplomatic and economic engagement with Latin America's second-largest economy despite Washington's concerns.
