Xi Jinping's diplomatic blitz ahead of Trump meeting signals Beijing's broader global reach

Chinese President Xi Jinping has packed his calendar with high-level diplomatic engagements across Eurasia and the Middle East in what analysts describe as a calculated effort to reinforce Beijing's leverage ahead of his scheduled meeting with Donald Trump in just over two weeks.

Packed itinerary signals strategic intent

Xi wrapped up the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, before conducting a state visit to Egypt. He is expected to travel to New Delhi later this week for the Brics summit and then proceed to Washington, though Beijing has not yet confirmed those two trips in keeping with its practice of announcing official travel at the last minute.

Sun Chenghao, a fellow at Tsinghua University's Centre for International Security and Strategy, said the summit with Trump was important but Xi's diplomatic sequencing emphasised that China's foreign relations did not "revolve around a single axis centred on Washington".

Beyond bilateral progress

Observers say the concentrated diplomatic activity serves a dual purpose: advancing bilateral relationships while simultaneously strengthening China's negotiating position with the United States. The scheduling allows Xi to showcase Beijing's engagement with major multilateral groupings and individual nations spanning Central Asia, the Middle East, and South Asia before sitting down with the American president.

The diplomatic blitz represents one of Xi's busiest stretches of international travel in recent years. By leveraging China's ties across Eurasia and the Middle East, Beijing is demonstrating to Washington that it maintains robust alternatives and partnerships beyond the bilateral relationship with the United States.
