Chennai Corporation collects ₹157.39 crore in property tax drive

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has amassed ₹157.39 crore in property tax during its special collection drive, which began on July 3 and is set to conclude on July 31, 2026. The initiative, aimed at recovering arrears, has seen stringent enforcement actions against defaulters, including the sealing of commercial establishments.

Enforcement Measures Target Major Defaulters

In a notable move, GCC officials sealed the premises of South India Hotels Private Limited in Egmore, Royapuram zone, on Wednesday. The establishment had failed to renew its trade licence for the 2026-27 financial year and owed ₹8,38,850 in property tax arrears.

Similarly, Velavan Stores Silks Private Limited on Usman Road, T. Nagar, Kodambakkam zone, faced enforcement action for unpaid property tax dues amounting to ₹15,91,494. The premises were reopened only after the company cleared its outstanding amount in full.

Deadline for Dues Approaching

The civic body has urged all property owners with pending dues to settle their arrears by July 31 to avoid penal interest and further enforcement measures. This final push is part of GCC's broader effort to boost revenue and ensure compliance with property tax regulations.
