Chelsea held by resilient Hull City after thrilling Stamford Bridge comeback

Joao Pedro's unstoppable near-post finish salvaged a point for Chelsea after the Premier League leaders had fallen two goals behind to newly-promoted Hull City in front of their home supporters.

Cole Palmer's cross from the left found the Brazilian striker, who smashed home a shot that left Hull goalkeeper Tzolakis helpless to set up a dramatic final quarter at the Bridge. The goal leveled the match after Mohamed Belloumi had scored twice for the Tigers, who arrived at Stamford Bridge having taken seven points from their opening three fixtures without conceding a goal.

Hull Twice Ahead Despite Constant Chelsea Pressure

The visitors had looked on course for a famous victory after Belloumi's double, but Chelsea's attacking quality eventually told as the hosts mounted sustained pressure. Paul Merson, analyzing the match on Soccer Saturday, suggested Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic had joked pre-match that the only way to stop Chelsea's front three was to kick them, adding: "All three of them have had goal involvements today, so they obviously haven't kicked them hard enough".

Hull's afternoon was complicated by a series of injuries that forced manager to make substitutions. Mendy suffered a nasty moment after some brilliant defending at the back post, appearing dazed and requiring replacement. The defender had produced a sensational and brave headed clearance as Joao Pedro looked to head home, with both players needing treatment after they appeared to collide with the post.

Triple Substitution Disrupts Hull's Rhythm

A triple Hull change saw Herrington, Thomas and Ali-Cho all enter the fray in place of the injured Mendy, Stroud and two-goal hero Belloumi. The enforced alterations came at a crucial moment in the contest, with Chelsea pressing hard for an equalizer.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso had made nine changes to his side following a barnstorming midweek Carabao Cup tie, when the Blues came from two goals down to record a 6-3 win over Leeds United. However, there were just two alterations to the side that began the last league outing against Arsenal.

Martinez Returns Between the Posts

Emi Martinez returned in goal for the Blues and was protected by a back three consisting of Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Jorrel Hato. Malo Gusto and Pedro Neto occupied the wing-back roles, with captain Reece James and Romeo Lavia in central midfield. The front three of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro were reinstated into the starting XI, with Danny Welbeck among the substitutes.

It marked Hull's first Premier League visit to Stamford Bridge since January 2017. The Tigers' impressive defensive record at the start of the season had raised hopes of an upset, and for long periods those hopes appeared well-founded.

Chelsea Dominate Possession Without Breakthrough

Merson observed that Chelsea dominated for extended periods, noting: "It's all Chelsea. Hull haven't got out of their half. They kick it away and stay there as Chelsea come back". He added: "Hull can't play like this for the next 40 minutes".

After the equalizer, Merson commented on a missed opportunity: "That was McBurnie's moment. That could've put the game to bed". The striker should have added a third for Hull after Martinez spilled Slater's powerful drive from the edge of the area, but McBurnie just failed to beat the goalkeeper after latching on to the rebound. Merson described the incident: "Slater smashes it straight at Martinez who smashes it down. It comes out to McBurnie, but Martinez is able to stick a toe out".

Chances at Both Ends in Frantic Finale

The match became increasingly stretched after Chelsea's equalizer. Neto drove to the righthand byline to win his side a corner, but the Hull back line held firm. Another lovely Hull move opened up the Blues, only for the offside flag to come to their rescue.

Chelsea continued to probe for a winner. Tzolakis did brilliantly to get across and get fingertips to James's curling effort, with the Hull number one also there to claim from the resulting left-wing corner. Merson praised the save: "What a save from the goalkeeper! It was going to hit the post, but brilliant reach!".

Gusto's looping cross to the back post was diverted behind by Coyle, with Chelsea screaming for a handball, but the referee awarded another corner. James stood over a free kick after Rogers was taken out by Crooks to hand the hosts a set piece in a dangerous area, 25 yards out, just left of centre. Tzolakis was there to gather Palmer's free kick at his near post.

Bookings and Set-Piece Opportunities

The match became increasingly physical as both sides pressed for a winner. Egan went in the book for hacking down Chavarria to hand Chelsea a free kick near the lefthand touchline, level with the area. Earlier, Crooks had been penalized for taking out Rogers.

Late substitutions saw Iroegbunam come on for Crooks, while Barco replaced Lavia for the Blues. A nice Chelsea move down the right ended with Gusto's lofted cross being turned behind for the first corner of the second half, which the Tigers defence dealt with. Hull also launched a long throw into the Chelsea box, causing panic in the home defence, before an effort from the edge of the area was flashed wide.

Merson summed up Hull's approach after Chelsea's first goal: "Chelsea are level... It shouldn't have happened. Hull needed to do better". His assessment reflected the sense that the visitors had allowed Chelsea back into a match they had controlled for long periods.

The draw represented a creditable point for Hull in their return to the Premier League, while Chelsea will rue their inability to break down the Tigers' resistance for long stretches of the contest despite fielding their strongest attacking trio.
