British Council to Resume IELTS Exams in China After Four-Day Cancellation

The British Council said IELTS examinations across China would resume Wednesday, ending four days of cancellations linked to technical problems.

The disruption struck at a crucial point for mainland students, coming at the height of the overseas university admissions season.

The cancellations left test takers scrambling as they dealt with the interruption to examinations across the country.

Free make-up sessions announced

The organisation announced on Tuesday afternoon that it would hold two free make-up sessions for affected candidates.

The sessions are scheduled for October 19 and 20.

The British Council also said it would reimburse reasonable travel and accommodation costs for candidates who travelled to testing centres.

The cancellations began on Saturday and continued through Tuesday, before the planned resumption of examinations on Wednesday.

The disruption marked a rare nationwide breakdown since the International English Language Testing System was introduced to mainland China in 1989.

The British Council’s decision provides affected candidates with replacement testing opportunities and reimbursement support, while bringing the disruption to an end after four days.
