BJP questions Congress after court order on Sonia’s electoral rol

A Delhi court has set aside a Magistrate’s order that had refused to inquire into a complaint alleging that senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s name appeared on the electoral roll in 1980, three years before she became an Indian citizen.

The court has sent the matter back to the Magistrate court, directing it to pass a reasoned order after hearing fresh arguments.

BJP raises questions after court order

The BJP attacked the Congress on Tuesday (September 2, 2026), a day after the Delhi court order in the matter.

At a press conference on Tuesday, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari asked whether there were any irregularities in the inclusion of Ms. Gandhi’s name in the electoral roll in 1980.

Mr. Bhandari said such an action was a violation of Article 326 of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act.

He also said it was a cognisable offence.

The BJP spokesperson said Ms. Gandhi was not an Indian citizen in 1980.

He questioned whether there had been an “attempt to forge documents, given that the Congress was in power from 1980 to 1983”.

Rahul Gandhi asked to clarify

Mr. Bhandari sought a clarification from Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

“There can be no greater theft of democracy than this, because on the one hand, they support infiltrators in the name of opposing the SIR (Special Intensive Revision), while on the other hand, when they themselves allegedly steal democracy through forged documents, they remain silent,” he alleged.

The BJP’s attack links the court’s decision to send the complaint back for fresh consideration with its allegation that the Congress must answer questions about Ms. Gandhi’s electoral roll entry in 1980.

The dispute matters because the complaint concerns an electoral roll entry that is alleged to have appeared before Ms. Gandhi became an Indian citizen, and the court has required the Magistrate court to reconsider the issue through a reasoned order after fresh arguments.

“If Rahul Gandhi does not answer all these questions, the people of the country and the youth will understand his silence as an admission of guilt, indicating that they have committed theft of democracy,” said Mr. Bhandari.
