Barcelona maintain perfect start with Yamal shining despite striker search

Lamine Yamal continued his impressive form as Barcelona secured their second consecutive La Liga victory, defeating Athletic Club 2-0 at Camp Nou on Wednesday evening, even as the club's pursuit of striker Julian Alvarez remains unresolved.

The 17-year-old winger nearly opened the scoring early in the match with a left-footed strike that forced a providential save from Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón, sparking Barcelona's dominance after the visitors' intense opening twenty minutes. Though still short of full fitness, Yamal threatened repeatedly with his talent down the wing and later smashed a shot against the crossbar in the second half as Barcelona searched for a second goal.

Raphinha and Pedri Lead Victory

Raphinha, deployed again as an out-and-out striker in the absence of a new signing, broke the deadlock in the 37th minute with a clinical finish. Pedri took hold of the ball and delivered a perfect vertical pass that Raphinha latched onto, dribbling past Unai Simón before tapping into the net unopposed. The Brazilian's goal showcased the quality of a top-class centre-forward, addressing immediate concerns about Barcelona's striker situation.

Pedri proved omnipresent in midfield, controlling Athletic's proactive play while orchestrating Barcelona's attacking movements. Before halftime, Simón denied Yamal again, the winger's shot striking the shoulder of his national team colleague.

Fermín López sealed the contest in the 82nd minute, finishing at will from an inadvertent assist by Athletic's Aymeric Laporte, marking his third goal in Barcelona's opening two league matches.

Transfer Saga Continues

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick indicated Wednesday the club may end the summer transfer window without signing a new striker if their bid to lure 2022 World Cup winner Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid fails. The 26-year-old forward missed Atletico's training on Wednesday due to illness, while his club has thus far refused to sell.

President Joan Laporta reiterated the club's position, stating, "It seems that the player wants to come to Barca, and therefore we continue to hold on to our hope, our intention, always with the utmost respect for Atletico Madrid, of being able to sign the player". Spanish media reported Laporta wants "Alvarez or nobody".

Laporta said Barcelona had received information that Atletico had been in talks with other clubs about potentially selling Alvarez, with Arsenal linked to the striker in recent days. "We would like to reach an understanding with Atletico Madrid: we maintain our proposal, our offer," Laporta continued, hoping that if Atletico sell the player, Barcelona will acquire his services.

Flick expressed confidence in his current squad despite the transfer uncertainty. "I have total confidence with the quality we have now," the German coach told reporters, noting the club must think about the future beyond the present moment.

Perfect Start to Title Defence

The Catalan giants are riding high after consecutive league titles and have now opened their season with back-to-back victories as they search for a threepeat in La Liga. Their 5-0 demolition of Elche on Sunday, where Raphinha and Fermín López both scored twice, served as a clear warning that Barcelona will not relinquish the title easily.

Athletic Club, beaten 3-1 at home by Sevilla in their season opener, remain without a point after two matches. The Bilbao-based side has not recorded a league win against Barcelona since August 2019, when Aritz Aduriz scored the only goal with just a minute remaining.
