Aman Sanger: How Immigrant Parents Shaped a Billion-Dollar AI Career

Long before Aman Sanger emerged as one of the youngest billionaires in the artificial intelligence industry, his path to success was shaped by a family legacy steeped in education, entrepreneurship, and ambition. The 25-year-old co-founder of AI coding startup Cursor is on track to see his fortune skyrocket following SpaceX's agreement to acquire Anysphere, Cursor's parent company, in an all-stock deal valued at $60 billion. The transaction is expected to close later this year.

The deal could leave each of Cursor's four co-founders, including Sanger, with an estimated net worth of approximately $2.7 billion. Sanger's rise, however, is deeply rooted in the influence of his Indian immigrant parents, who instilled in him the importance of academic excellence and professional achievement.

His father, Arvind Sanger, is a distinguished Wall Street veteran who graduated from IIT Bombay in 1984 with a B.Tech degree before moving to the United States. He later earned an MBA from Tulane University and built a successful career as an oil services and equipment analyst at firms such as Deutsche Bank and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. In 2007, Arvind founded Geosphere Capital, an investment firm focusing on natural resources, industrial sectors, and Indian equities. He also served as a portfolio manager at SAC Capital from 2002 to 2007 and has contributed to educational and policy organizations like Pratham USA and the Alexander Hamilton Society.

Sanger's mother, Shilpa, took a different professional path. Raised in Mumbai as the eldest of five children in a Marwari family, she trained as a dentist and orthodontist, running her own practice in the city for 12 years. Her life took a turn after meeting Arvind during a visit to New York for continuing education. The couple dated for 18 months before marrying, and Shilpa moved to New York in 1999. Instead of requalifying as a dentist in the U.S., she chose to focus on raising her family.

Aman was born in 2000, followed by his younger sister about 18 months later. Shilpa later entered the startup ecosystem as an angel investor through the Golden Seeds network and took on a business management role at Geosphere Capital. She also became involved in charitable and educational initiatives through Pratham USA. Growing up in a household surrounded by investing, entrepreneurship, and professional achievement profoundly influenced Aman.

Sanger began coding at the age of 14, developing an early passion for technology. He pursued computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) between 2018 and 2022, where he also played squash and participated in university athletics. Before co-founding Cursor, he gained valuable experience through internships at Google and Bridgewater Associates and even launched an AI consultancy.

In 2022, Sanger joined forces with fellow MIT students Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, and Arvid Lunnemark to establish Cursor, which quickly became a major success in Silicon Valley. Cursor's software, designed to help developers write, edit, and improve code using artificial intelligence, is now utilized by millions of programmers across approximately 50,000 companies, including Nvidia, Adobe, Uber, Shopify, and PayPal.

The company has reportedly surpassed $1 billion in annualized revenue, attracting billions in investments and catching the attention of SpaceX. Forbes previously estimated Sanger's wealth at $1.3 billion based on his stake in Cursor, but the planned acquisition is expected to more than double that figure to around $2.6 billion.
