Congress leaders and workers from Morena and Bhind who were travelling to Delhi to take part in a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls were detained by police in Morena around midnight between Monday and Tuesday. The action took place before their march to Delhi and triggered political unrest in the district.

Several senior Congress functionaries, including the presidents of the district and city Congress units, were taken into custody. The detained leaders include Madhuraj Tomar, president of the District Congress Committee, Morena; Gajendra Jatav, president of the City District Congress; and Pinky Bhadauria, president of the Bhind District Congress Committee.

Vineet Kansana, the Leader of the Opposition in the municipal corporation, was also among those detained by the police. The police action involved several Congress leaders who were reportedly preparing to leave for Delhi to join the protest against SIR.

According to the information available, the leaders were detained during the midnight action as they were heading to Delhi. Congress leaders from Morena and Bhind were scheduled to take part in the demonstration being held in Delhi against the revision of voter lists.

After the action, all the Congress leaders were kept at Hotel Severon on M.S. Road in Morena. The hotel has been made a temporary holding place for the detained leaders following the police action.

There is a possibility that some time later, the leaders may be released after furnishing bonds. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding their release so far. The timing of the release and the exact conditions, if any, have also not been officially clarified.

The Congress has been protesting against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. As part of this campaign, Congress office-bearers from Morena and Bhind were travelling to Delhi for the protest. The police action before they could reach Delhi has raised questions over their programme.

The official reason behind the police action is not clear at present. It is also yet to be clarified under which legal provision the leaders were detained and how long they will remain in custody.

The action, which took place during the midnight period between Monday and Tuesday, has added to the political activity surrounding the SIR protest in Morena. The detained leaders include district-level and city-level Congress office-bearers as well as other senior party functionaries.
