Yamuna and Betwa rivers rise, sparking flood fears in Hamirpur

The water levels of the Yamuna and Betwa rivers in Hamirpur district are rising steadily, causing concern among residents living near the banks. According to reports, the Yamuna river's water level is increasing at a rate of seven centimeters per hour, while the Betwa river is rising by five centimeters per hour. Currently, the Yamuna is flowing at 94.36 meters, and the Betwa at 92.96 meters—both still below the danger mark. The Yamuna is nine meters away from the danger level, while the Betwa remains 12 meters below it.

Despite being below the critical threshold, the rising water levels have already started impacting nearby areas. Vegetable fields along the banks of the Betwa river have been submerged, raising concerns about crop damage and livelihoods. The Central Water Commission is closely monitoring the situation, conducting checks every two hours to track the rivers' levels.

Experts suggest that the rising levels of the Yamuna are directly influencing the Betwa river, as the two rivers converge just five kilometers from the district headquarters. Additionally, water released from rivers in Rajasthan is contributing to the surge, further aggravating the situation.

Residents living near the riverbanks are growing increasingly anxious as the threat of flooding looms. Many are worried about potential evacuation measures and the safety of their homes and belongings. Local authorities have yet to issue an official alert but are keeping a close watch on the developments.

With the monsoon season underway and water levels rising rapidly, the situation demands urgent attention to prevent any major disaster in the region.
