Yamuna and Betwa rivers surge in Hamirpur, threatening crops and low-lying areas

Water levels in the Yamuna and Betwa rivers flowing through Hamirpur district headquarters have begun rising rapidly, prompting authorities to issue advisories to residents living along the banks. The sudden surge has been attributed to coordinated water releases from multiple dams upstream, raising concerns about potential flooding in low-lying areas.

The Betwa river has climbed above 98 meters while the Yamuna has reached 97 meters following substantial water discharge from several major dams. The Maudaha, Matatila, and Lahchura dams have released water into the Betwa, while the Yamuna has received discharge from the Okhla Barrage and Hathnikund Barrage. These releases, typically undertaken to manage reservoir levels during the monsoon season, have significantly impacted downstream areas.

The rising waters have already caused extensive damage to standing crops and agricultural land along both riverbanks. Farmers in the region are facing losses as their fields, particularly the low-lying plots near the water's edge, have been inundated. The destruction of crops comes at a critical time in the agricultural calendar, compounding the economic distress for local farming communities.

District administration has placed villages situated close to the rivers under close watch and has advised residents to maintain a safe distance from the waterways. Officials are monitoring the situation closely to prevent any loss of life and are prepared to undertake evacuation measures if water levels continue to rise.
