Woman dies at UP health center, villagers demand action for alleged negligence

A maternal death at a community health center in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh has triggered a major controversy and drawn angry protests from villagers and family members demanding action against those responsible. The incident, which occurred at the Community Health Centre in Havaspur, has exposed allegations of severe negligence and sparked a showdown between protesters and administrative authorities outside the District Magistrate's office.

The family of the deceased woman and members of a social organization called Ek Ummeed Jan Kalyan Seva Samiti, along with a large number of villagers, staged a protest and gherao at the District Magistrate's office after they grew frustrated with inaction by the health department despite their repeated complaints. The demonstrators raised slogans and voiced their anger against the health department's working style and alleged lapses that led to the woman's death.

The protest witnessed heated exchanges and sharp confrontation between administrative officials and the demonstrators. The sit-in was called off only after the District Magistrate took a strict stance on the matter and the Chief Medical Officer provided assurances to the aggrieved family that action would be taken.

The case relates to a woman who had come to the CHC Havaspur for delivery and died there. Following her death, family members accused the staff of negligence and began demanding action against those responsible. When no action was taken, anger among the relatives intensified. The victim's family, accompanied by Diksha Yadav, the National Secretary of Ek Ummeed Jan Kalyan Seva Samiti, and villagers, reached the District Magistrate's office and launched the protest demonstration.

According to the family's allegations, a staff nurse present at the health center conducted the delivery without any doctor being present. The relatives claim that after the delivery, the staff nurse demanded money in the name of 'neg' or a customary payment. They allege that when they could not provide the money, serious negligence was committed, which resulted in the death of the mother.

Despite lodging a complaint following the incident, when the health department failed to take any concrete steps, the victim's family and a large number of villagers reached the collectorate under the leadership of Diksha Yadav, the National Secretary of Ek Ummeed Jan Kalyan Seva Samiti. The protesters demanded that the District Magistrate and Chief Medical Officer be called to the spot to address their grievances.

During the confrontation, there were sharp clashes and heated arguments between officials and demonstrators, as well as with the police force that had arrived to control the situation. The Chief Medical Officer, who reached the spot after receiving information about the protest, assured the victim's family of an impartial inquiry and strict legal action against those found guilty.

Following this assurance, organization secretary Diksha Yadav and the victim's family met with the District Magistrate and presented their case. The protest was finally withdrawn after receiving assurances from both the District Magistrate and the Chief Medical Officer. The organization head expressed hope that the administration had given an assurance this time to take action against the negligent staff members.

The uproar and slogan-shouting at the DM office reflected the anger of people who are unhappy with the health department's functioning and approach to such serious matters involving maternal care and safety.
