A suspected thief named Nawab Haider was arrested in an injured condition after a police encounter in Muzaffarnagar, while his alleged accomplice fled from the spot. The action was carried out by the New Mandi police during a campaign against criminals in Muzaffarnagar district.

According to the police, an illegal country-made pistol, cartridges, a motorcycle without a number plate, a stolen gas cylinder and tools allegedly used for theft were recovered from the arrested accused. The police said the action also helped solve a theft case registered after cash, two gas cylinders and other belongings were stolen from a house in Bachchan Singh Colony.

On 30 October, Rishabh Dev Sharma, a resident of Bachchan Singh Colony, had lodged a complaint stating that cash, two gas cylinders and other items had been stolen from his house. A case was registered at New Mandi police station, after which police teams began searching for the suspected thieves.

On Monday 2 November, the New Mandi police were checking suspicious vehicles near Platinum Resort on Panchenda Road. During the checking, two young men were seen approaching on a motorcycle without a number plate. A gas cylinder was placed between them on the motorcycle.

The police signalled the riders to stop. Instead of stopping, the two men turned the motorcycle around and tried to escape. When the police pursued them, the accused abandoned the motorcycle and the gas cylinder before entering a sugarcane field.

According to the police, the suspects opened fire at the police team during the cordoning operation. The police then carried out retaliatory action, in which one of the suspects suffered a gunshot injury. His alleged accomplice managed to flee.

The injured accused was identified by the police as Nawab Haider, son of Chand Miyan alias Hasan, a resident of Nyazupura under Kotwali Nagar police station. He was sent to a hospital for treatment.

The police identified the absconding accused as Aftab, son of Dilshad, also a resident of Nyazupura. A search operation is being carried out to locate him.

The recoveries made from the spot included a 315 bore country-made pistol, one live cartridge and one spent cartridge. The police also recovered the stolen gas cylinder, the black HF Deluxe motorcycle allegedly used in the incident and a bag containing tools used for theft.

The bag contained pliers, a hammer and an iron rod, along with other items, according to the police.

During preliminary questioning, Nawab Haider allegedly told the police that he and Aftab had carried out the theft at a locked house in Bachchan Singh Colony on the night of 29/30 October. The recovered gas cylinder was also allegedly stolen from the same house.

The accused also allegedly told the police that the motorcycle used in the incident had been stolen from Dehradun about one month earlier. Police said the other stolen items had already been sold.

According to the police, more than 15 cases are registered against Nawab Haider at different police stations in Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar. These cases include theft, housebreaking, violations under the Arms Act and cases under the NDPS Act. Another case has also been registered against him at New Mandi police station.

The entire operation was carried out under the direction of SSP Sanjay Kumar Verma, the supervision of SP City Amrit Jain and the leadership of CO New Mandi Raju Kumar Saw. The team was led on the ground by New Mandi station in-charge Anand Dev Mishra.

The police said combing operations were continuing to search for the absconding accused. Further legal action in the case is under way.

The report is by Anmol Kumar from Muzaffarnagar.
