Who won in China? In the US midterms, Susan Collins and the local firefighters

Republican Senator Susan Collins won the vote in China, Maine, on Tuesday, while volunteer firefighters also emerged as winners in local contests held across small American communities with China in their names. The same election included a Senate race alongside community decisions focused on local services.

A local result inside a statewide race

In China, a lakeside town in northeastern Maine, Collins outpolled Democrat Troy Jackson by 1,333 votes to 871, according to the town’s general election return.

Statewide, however, Jackson defeated Collins to win the Senate seat. The contrast places the town’s result within a broader statewide contest, even as local voters took part in contests about fire engines, budgets and paving.

Local issues on the ballot

The local contests had little to do with Beijing and a great deal to do with fire engines, budgets and paving. Voters in several small American communities with China in their names cast ballots in Tuesday’s US midterm elections.

In two towns called China Grove, road repairs and council seats were on the ballot.
