Santos face impossible odds after 3-0 Copa do Brasil defeat to Palmeiras

Santos midfielder Willian Arão conceded his team could have suffered an even heavier loss after Palmeiras delivered a commanding 3-0 victory in Wednesday's Copa do Brasil quarter-final first leg at Nubank Parque.

The comprehensive defeat leaves Santos requiring a four-goal swing to advance directly or a three-goal margin to force penalties when the sides meet again at Vila Belmiro next Wednesday.

Midfielder Acknowledges Rival's Dominance

Speaking to Globo after the match, Arão did not shy away from the uncomfortable truth of his team's performance. "They had more chances, they could have won by more, that's the truth. We have to recognise they were superior, that we played very badly," the midfielder admitted.

Flaco López scored twice for Palmeiras, with Andreas Pereira adding the third goal to establish a commanding advantage ahead of the return fixture.

The volante identified a single genuine opportunity for Santos, a set-piece situation involving himself, while acknowledging Palmeiras created far more dangerous chances throughout the 90 minutes.

Call for Immediate Improvement

Arão issued a pointed challenge to his teammates about their approach, suggesting Wednesday's display fell short of expectations for a club of Santos' stature. "We have to correct the errors and the posture we had today. It was not a posture worthy of Santos and the greatness of this match," he told broadcasters.

The veteran midfielder emphasised the need to refocus immediately, with a crucial Brasileirão clash against Corinthians scheduled for Sunday at Neo Química Arena. That 16h fixture carries added significance given Santos' current position in the national championship.

Abel's Tactical Adjustment

Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira made significant changes to his starting eleven for the first leg, most notably addressing the departure of Allan to Manchester City in a €40 million transfer. The midfielder, previously a regular starter and key performer, has already left for England and did not feature.

Abel responded by inserting Jhon Arias and Maurício into his lineup while also reverting to a back four, bringing in Giay and the recently recovered Piquerez at fullback after removing Barboza. Paulinho, another player returning from injury, was not included in the matchday squad despite speculation he might make the bench.

Mountain to Climb

Santos now face a near-impossible task in the return leg at Vila Belmiro on Wednesday at 21h30. Any result other than a Santos win by three or more goals will send Palmeiras through to the semi-finals.
