Newcastle United secured their first Premier League victory of the season with a 2-0 triumph at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, extending Spurs' alarming home form crisis to 21 league defeats since the start of 2024-25.

Anthony Elanga opened the scoring on the hour mark before Yoane Wissa sealed the points with a spectacular bicycle kick, leaving Tottenham with zero points from their opening two fixtures despite spending £320 million in the summer transfer window.

Elanga Rediscovers His Scoring Touch

The breakthrough arrived through a meticulously rehearsed set-piece routine that showcased Newcastle's tactical preparation. New signing Nico Gonzalez, dropping deep into a quarterback role, delivered a booming diagonal pass to right-back Amar Dedic, who had galloped forward and remained just onside. Dedic's headed ball found Elanga, who controlled with the outside of his foot, spun past former Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, and curled a spinning left-footed effort that struck the left post before nestling in the opposite corner.

The goal marked Elanga's second in as many matches after failing to score in 32 Premier League appearances last season, making him the first player to net in Newcastle's opening two games of a campaign since Alan Shearer in 2003-04.

Wissa's Acrobatic Masterpiece

Newcastle doubled their advantage through Wissa's stunning overhead kick, the result of another substitute making an immediate impact. Nick Woltemade, who had only just entered the match, nodded down Lewis Hall's corner at the back post, leaving Wissa unmarked in the six-yard box to execute a superb bicycle kick into the corner. The finish was particularly noteworthy given Wissa's recent struggles in front of goal despite an otherwise impressive performance against Liverpool the previous weekend.

Spurs' Home Fortress Crumbles

The defeat represents Tottenham's 21st home league loss since the start of 2024-25, equalling Wolverhampton Wanderers for the most such Premier League defeats. From 39 matches at their stadium, Spurs have managed only nine wins and nine draws, accumulating just 36 points.

Frustrations boiled over at the final whistle as brief unsavoury scenes erupted with Tottenham players shoving each other, though the confrontation was quickly diffused. Pedro Porro was involved in further pushing and shoving as tempers flared.

Jamie Carragher, speaking from the stadium, acknowledged the quality of summer recruits Bruno Fernandes and Tonali but warned that panic would inevitably push Tottenham back into the transfer market. "If you've won both games and some of the players looked alright, you'd think 'maybe we're OK,' but that certainly won't be the case on the back of two really bad defeats," he observed.

Newcastle's Tactical Maturity

Sky Sports pundit Carragher praised Newcastle's controlled performance, contrasting it with their more emotional counter-attacking display against Liverpool in the opening weekend. Wissa dedicated the victory to Newcastle's travelling supporters after the match, telling Sky Sports: "These fans, they are so lovely. They love their club, they love their players. What they want is for us to give them everything we have in our bodies".

As Spurs fans streamed towards the exits and boos rang out at the final whistle, the nightmare start under manager Roberto De Zerbi left the club facing mounting pressure despite their substantial summer investment.
