A foundation-laying ceremony was held for a proposed bus terminal at the Uppal Zonal Workshop, a project estimated to cost ₹3.22 crore. The project is expected to be completed within 100 days.

Terminal to serve nearly one lakh passengers

Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday (October 24, 2026), Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Parbhakar said the proposed terminal would have modern facilities and serve nearly one lakh passengers a day.

About 1,053 bus trips originate from the location, with services connecting Bhongir, Yadagirigutta, Hanamkonda and Warangal, among other places. The terminal would also serve the Peerzadiguda and Boduppal areas and be named accordingly, Mr. Prabhakar said.

The project is part of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation’s efforts to develop the RTC with a focus on passenger convenience, employee welfare and the protection of the organisation. Its proposed capacity is significant for a location already handling more than 1,000 bus trips, while the modern facilities are intended to support the large number of passengers using the service each day.

TGSRTC converting old diesel buses

The TGSRTC is also working to retrofit 250 old diesel buses into electric vehicles in the first phase. Mr. Prabhakar said the move formed part of a larger push towards clean mobility and efforts to reduce emissions.

He said 3,000 electric buses had already been added to the RTC fleet. Another 2,200 electric buses are expected to be inducted under the PM e-Drive initiative, he added.

The government is promoting electric vehicles through its EV policy, under which zero tax is applicable to eligible vehicles. An allocation of ₹200 crore has been earmarked for electric vehicles, including autos, in the Core Urban Region.

Workers’ demands and employee dues

Mr. Prabhakar also referred to the principal demand of TGSRTC workers and unions to merge the corporation with the government. He said efforts towards the merger were underway.

Following the recently held trade union elections, conducted after a gap of 10 years, a committee would be constituted with the elected recognised union to initiate the process, he added.

The government was also addressing the pensions of retired employees and clearing pending contributions relating to the CCS and provident fund in phases, the Minister said. Pay Revision Commission recommendations had been implemented, and no DA was outstanding, he said.

Referring to the Mahalakshmi scheme, Mr. Prabhakar said women had made several crore journeys free of cost under the scheme. He said the scheme had resulted in substantial savings on travel expenses.

The government was also establishing automated testing stations and had introduced reflectors and a vehicle scrapping policy to improve road safety.
