Modi warns BRICS against weaponising technology and critical minerals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised the alarm over the "weaponisation of technology and critical minerals", cautioning that such practices could obstruct shared progress and prosperity among nations. Addressing the BRICS summit, he underscored that rising geopolitical tensions are inflicting a significant toll on ordinary citizens worldwide, and called on the bloc to unite in tackling these challenges while driving inclusive growth, especially across the Global South.

Geopolitical tensions impacting ordinary lives

Mr. Modi stressed that the world is witnessing increasing tensions that are having a significant negative impact on the lives of ordinary people. He pointed out that pandemics, climate disasters and supply chain disruptions have demonstrated that in today's interconnected world, no crisis remains confined to a single region. This reality, he argued, makes it essential to identify challenges in a timely manner, remain prepared for them and take immediate action.

India's presidency focused on four pillars

Speaking in the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, the Prime Minister outlined India's approach during its presidency. "Under India's presidency, we have focused our efforts on four pillars: resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability," Mr. Modi said. He expressed satisfaction that with the cooperation and support of member nations, the grouping has been able to transform its shared vision into a win-win situation.

Early warning system and supply chain framework

The Prime Minister announced that a consensus has been reached on a BRICS Integrated Early Warning System for the prevention of and response to infectious diseases. He added that guidelines for an early warning data integration mechanism have also been formulated. To enhance the reliability and resilience of supply chains, the BRICS logistic supply chain cooperation framework has been established, Mr. Modi said.

Innovation and Global South engagement

Under the framework of innovation, the BRICS incubator network will connect startups and incubators across member nations, the Prime Minister noted. He emphasised that BRICS must work together to address challenges facing the Global South, adding that the Global South's confidence in BRICS has increased. The special emphasis on enhancing resilience within the BRICS group reflects the bloc's recognition that collective preparedness is crucial in an era of interconnected crises.
