Hong Kong Makes Wider Yuan Use Key Priority in Five-Year Plan
Hong Kong is promoting wider yuan use through digital payments, retail, government spending and cross-border trade, but consumer habits remain a hurdle.
Hong Kong’s wider yuan push: a gateway to the world?
In September, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu unveiled Hong Kong’s first five-year plan and policy address, making the promotion of wider yuan use outside mainland China a key priority.
The announcement highlights Hong Kong’s strategic role in extending the currency’s use beyond mainland China. The government’s push aims to make the yuan part of everyday life, although consumer habits and other obstacles remain.
From policy to everyday payments
The effort covers a range of uses, from vending machines and retail payments to government spending and cross-border trade. This places ordinary consumer transactions alongside larger areas of economic activity in Hong Kong’s wider yuan strategy.
The development is examined by Lam Ka-sing in the last of a four-part series on the internationalisation of the yuan. The series looks at Hong Kong’s attempt to make the currency more familiar in daily transactions and across broader commercial activity.
At Hong Kong’s Central Ferry Pier No 8, mainland Chinese tourist Lei was surprised to find that the digital currency e-CNY could be used to buy drinks from a vending machine.
Lei, a logistics worker in his twenties from Guangxi, had never encountered the digital currency or its related payment system in real life. The system was developed by the country’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China.
The vending-machine example shows the practical side of Hong Kong’s policy priority, while the continuing role of consumer habits and other obstacles points to the challenges involved in making the yuan part of everyday life.
