Gwalior Police Plans Crackdown on Carbide Guns Ahead of Diwali
Gwalior Police has prepared an action plan to prevent the manufacture, purchase, sale and use of carbide guns during Diwali.
Gwalior Police has prepared an action plan to prevent the manufacture, purchase, sale and use of carbide guns during Diwali. The police will increase surveillance on those involved in making and selling the devices, following directions issued by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav. The move comes after more than 18 people suffered eye injuries during the previous Diwali.
Senior Superintendent of Police Dharmveer Singh has directed subordinate officers to ensure that the Chief Minister’s orders are followed under all circumstances. He has also instructed them to take effective action against the illegal trade in carbide guns.
The police plan includes monitoring businesses and places that could be linked to the manufacture of carbide guns. Special attention will be given to welding shops, hardware traders, wholesale firecracker markets, chemical suppliers, and sellers of plastic and iron pipes.
The police will watch for suspicious transactions and activities connected with these businesses if they appear to have a possible link with the making of carbide guns. The surveillance will cover the chain from the purchase of materials to the manufacture and sale of the devices.
The action followed a meeting held by the Chief Minister through video conference with the collectors and superintendents of police of all districts. At the meeting, directions were issued to prevent the manufacture, purchase and sale of carbide guns during Diwali.
After those directions, the police administration in Gwalior began preparing to increase its monitoring. A meeting was held under the chairmanship of SSP Dharmveer Singh. Officers from the Crime Branch, Cyber Cell, CID, DSB and SB, along with officials from other police branches, attended the meeting.
The officers were told to identify and monitor activities that could support the manufacture of carbide guns. The instructions cover not only the final sale of the devices but also the businesses and materials that may be used to make them.
SSP Dharmveer Singh has appealed to residents not to use carbide guns. He said the acetylene gas released by a carbide gun, along with the explosion that takes place during its use, can cause serious damage to the eyes.
The police have warned that the use of such dangerous equipment during Diwali celebrations can put a person’s life and eyesight at risk. The appeal is aimed at preventing accidents linked to carbide guns during the festival.
The police have made it clear that surveillance will be increased to stop activities related to the manufacture, purchase, sale and use of carbide guns. Residents have also been asked to inform the police if they learn about anyone making, selling or purchasing such devices.
The police will soon issue a WhatsApp number for sharing this information. People will be able to send details about the manufacture and sale of carbide guns through that number.
According to the police, the identity of people providing information will be kept confidential. This assurance has been given to encourage residents to report information about the illegal manufacture, sale or purchase of carbide guns.
During Diwali last year, cases were reported in which the eyes of more than one and a half dozen people were affected because of the use of carbide guns. The incidents raised serious questions about the use of the dangerous equipment.
The previous year’s incidents are one of the reasons the police have begun preparations in advance this time. The department plans to keep a close watch on the entire chain, from the manufacture of carbide guns to their sale, to prevent accidents during Diwali.
The police message is clear: “Diwali is a festival of happiness, not of dangerous experiments that take away the light of the eyes.”
