Ghaziabad: Senior accountant Shashank Kanthariya was attacked with a knife while asleep at his home in Vasundhara Sector 1, under the Indirapuram police station area, early on Monday, October 26. Neighbours and security personnel who responded to the commotion caught the alleged attacker and handed him over to police. Kanthariya was taken to a private hospital, where he remains under treatment.
According to the initial statement from Ghaziabad Police and local media reports, Kanthariya, 35, is originally from Jhansi and lives in a Vasundhara apartment with his wife Priya Sharma and their three-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Shashank and Priya are reported to work as senior accountants with the postal department in Delhi.
Attack took place around 5.30am
Police said Priya left home for her regular gym session early in the morning. A few minutes later, gym operator and trainer Pratap Singh allegedly entered the flat and stabbed Shashank multiple times while he was asleep. The couple's young daughter was also at home during the attack but was not injured.
Neighbours came out after hearing Shashank's cries. The alleged attacker tried to flee, but local residents and security personnel chased and caught him. Police were informed and the injured man was taken to hospital.
Police probing the wife's alleged role
Indirapuram assistant commissioner of police Suryabali Maurya said that during questioning, Pratap Singh claimed he wanted to marry Priya and alleged that she was part of a plan to remove Shashank. Priya denied the allegation during initial questioning. Police are examining CCTV footage, call records and other digital evidence.
Reports citing police said an FIR was registered on a complaint from the injured man's brother under provisions related to attempted murder and criminal conspiracy. Priya Sharma and Pratap Singh were detained for questioning. The allegations have not been proved in court, and the final findings will depend on the police investigation and judicial process.
Incident occurred three days before Karwa Chauth
The attack took place three days before Karwa Chauth, which is being observed in India on October 29, 2026. Married women traditionally fast on the day for their husbands' health and longevity. The timing has drawn attention to the case, but the police investigation concerns the circumstances of the attack, the conspiracy allegation and the available evidence.
