German startup Isar Aerospace launches Europe's first commercial orbital rocket from Norway

Germany's Isar Aerospace successfully placed its Spectrum rocket into orbit from Norway's Andoeya Spaceport, marking the first commercial flight to reach orbit from continental Europe and delivering a boost to the continent's ambitions for independent satellite-launch capability.

The uncrewed Spectrum carried five small satellites and an in-flight technological experiment during the mission, which Isar Aerospace described on social media as making "European history". The rocket blasted off from the Arctic spaceport and is designed for small and medium-sized payloads.

Europe's Push for Space Independence

Norway's minister of industry and commerce, Cecilie Myrseth, called the launch "a breakthrough for the European launch industry, giving the continent better access to space". She said the ability to launch satellites from Andoeya "strengthens Norwegian and European security in the turbulent times we live in".

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Isar's launch site in March, highlighting Europe's efforts to establish greater autonomy as the global order once championed by the United States is shifting under US President Donald Trump.

Growing Commercial Market

Several European nations have said they want a share of a growing market for space missions. Isar Aerospace, the German start-up behind the launch, plans to offer a commercial satellite launch service.

The successful orbital flight represents a significant step forward for Europe's commercial space sector, which has been working to compete in the expanding global satellite launch industry.
