Four-lane highway sparks political rivalry in Shravasti ahead of elections

The approval of a four-lane highway connecting Balrampur to Bahraich has sparked political maneuvering in Shravasti, Uttar Pradesh. While the project was sanctioned after being raised in Parliament, local leaders from Shravasti are now vying for credit. Central Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari recently met with several leaders from the district, who are keen to showcase their involvement ahead of upcoming elections.

A significant stretch of the highway passes through Shravasti, making it a focal point for local politicians. Construction work has already begun in Balrampur, with some parts nearing completion. However, as elections approach, representatives from Shravasti are using the project to bolster their image. On Tuesday, a BJP MLA from Shravasti met with Gadkari, followed by former BSP minister and ex-MP Daddan Mishra, who took to social media to highlight his meeting with the minister.

Critics, however, argue that these efforts are more about optics than genuine development. Shravasti, one of India’s most backward and aspirational districts, has received significant funds from both central and state governments. Yet, the region continues to grapple with poor infrastructure and unresolved complaints. Allegations have surfaced that local leaders are misleading residents while failing to address pressing issues. Daddan Mishra, for instance, has faced criticism for neglecting the village he adopted during his tenure as a BJP MP.

Masood Alam, National Secretary of the Samajwadi Party, recently blamed Shravasti’s representatives for hindering development in the district. His remarks resonate with many locals who feel that political gamesmanship is taking precedence over meaningful progress.

As Shravasti remains stuck in the aspirational district category, questions linger about whether the region will ever see substantial improvements. For now, the promise of development remains uncertain, leaving residents to wonder when their district will truly move forward.
