A 22-year-old woman and her 26-year-old husband, who had married for love, were found dead in suspicious circumstances in Bhopal on the night of Karwa Chauth. The woman, Shivani, was found hanging inside the bedroom of her home, while her husband, Suraj Ahirwar, was found hanging from a tree about 100 metres away from the house a few hours later.
The two had opened Shivani’s fast together after seeing the moon and had eaten a meal. Shivani had observed the waterless Karwa Chauth fast for her husband’s long life. However, within a few hours, both died at separate locations, leaving their families in shock.
According to the police, Shivani and Suraj had married for love in 2021. They lived in Barkheda Bonder. Suraj worked in farming and also did daily-wage labour. The couple had no children after their marriage.
Preliminary information indicates that there was tension and anger between the couple over some issues. However, the exact reason behind both deaths has not yet been established.
According to the family, Shivani had kept the Karwa Chauth fast for Suraj’s long life. After the moon appeared at night, the couple performed the puja together, opened the fast and had food. After eating, Suraj left the house at about 11:30 without telling his wife anything.
The family said Shivani was upset that Suraj had left in this manner on the night of Karwa Chauth. She wanted him to spend time with her on the special occasion. The source material does not state where Suraj went after leaving the house.
Suraj returned at about 2:30. By then, the bedroom door was locked from inside. He called out several times, but there was no response. He then looked inside through a hole in the door and saw Shivani hanging from a noose.
After seeing his wife hanging, Suraj informed his grandmother, who was present in the house. With the help of family members, the door was opened and Shivani was brought down. As soon as information about the incident spread, family members and villagers reached the spot. The police were also called.
In the meantime, Suraj left the house without telling anyone. His family members and villagers searched for him, but could not find him. At about 5 am, his body was found hanging from a tree around 100 metres from the house.
The family said Suraj was in deep shock after Shivani’s death. According to the family, he had allegedly said, “शिवानी नहीं तो मैं भी नहीं...” before leaving the house. Some time later, his body was also found hanging from the tree.
The police have not found any suicide note from either Shivani or Suraj. The circumstances surrounding both deaths are being examined.
Khajuri police station registered a marg in both cases and started an investigation. The police are questioning family members and people living nearby. The circumstances at the two locations and all other aspects connected with the deaths are being examined.
Khajuri police station Sub-Inspector Banwari Lal said that, during the preliminary questioning, information had emerged that Shivani was angry because her husband had left the house without telling her. He said that after the wife’s death, the husband also took an extreme step.
The police said the investigation into both cases is continuing. The actual reason behind the deaths has not yet become clear.
