The Swachh Bharat Mission’s claims of making villages clean and beautiful appear at odds with the situation in Akrauli village of Baniyakheda block. The village’s main drain is filled with garbage, polythene, plastic and other waste, leaving residents worried about the risk of illness.
The drain has reportedly been in a very poor condition for a long time. With no regular cleaning, dirty water has been collecting and rotting inside it. Grass and weeds have also grown around the drain, adding to the unhygienic conditions.
The condition of the drain can be seen clearly in the picture. Shoes and slippers, along with food and drink packets, have been thrown inside it. The accumulated waste has blocked the drain and created an unhealthy environment in the village.
Residents said that the drain has not been cleaned for a long time. The foul smell coming from the garbage and stagnant water has made life difficult for people living in the area.
They also said that mosquitoes and flies have increased in large numbers. According to the residents, this has raised the risk of dengue, malaria and other infectious diseases spreading in the village. Children and elderly people are facing the most difficulty because of the conditions around the drain.
Local people said that they had complained several times to the pradhan and officials of the block about the need for cleaning. However, they said that no action has been taken so far and their complaints have not received a response.
The residents have appealed to the District Magistrate of Sambhal and the Block Development Officer of Baniyakheda to arrange cleaning of the drain in Akrauli as soon as possible.
They have also demanded a proper waste disposal system for the village. Residents said that immediate cleaning and better waste management are needed to ensure that Akrauli remains clean and healthy.
