Ahmedabad to Host 2029 Senior Weightlifting World Championships, First Indian City
Ahmedabad will host the 2029 senior Weightlifting World Championships, becoming the first Indian city to stage the event, the IWF says.
The International Weightlifting Federation has awarded Ahmedabad the 2029 senior Weightlifting World Championships, making it the first Indian city to host the senior edition of the event.
The decision was announced on Sunday (October 25, 2026), after the IWF executive board meeting in Ningbo, China.
The championships will be the maiden senior Weightlifting World Championships to be held in India.
Four world events awarded
The IWF executive board awarded two senior world championships during the meeting, with Ahmedabad selected for 2029 and Moscow announced as the host city for the 2030 edition.
The board also awarded the 2028 World Youth Championships to Prishtina in Kosovo and the IWF World Junior Championships to Caracas in Venezuela.
IWF General Secretary José Quiñones said all the bids received by the federation were excellent and expressed confidence that the championships would be successful in their respective countries.
“All the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the Championships in your respective countries will be a huge success," Quiñones said at the end of the executive board vote.
The federation said that Kosovo, Venezuela and India would each be organising an IWF world event for the first time.
Ahmedabad’s wider hosting role
The IWF said the decision to award four world championships together was an important step towards consolidating its international calendar in the coming years.
The Ahmedabad announcement also adds a weightlifting world event to the city’s existing and prospective hosting responsibilities.
Ahmedabad will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
The city will also be the host if India gets the right to stage the 2036 Olympics, for which the country is in the running.
The federation said the first-time hosting decisions for India, Kosovo and Venezuela demonstrate that the sport is growing worldwide and that many nations want to stage its competitions.
The 2029 event will therefore mark India’s first senior Weightlifting World Championships while forming part of the IWF’s consolidated schedule of world championships.
