US and China reach agreement on AI dialogue, make trade progress

The United States and China have reached agreement on artificial intelligence dialogue and made headway on trade issues during weekend negotiations in New York, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced. The breakthrough comes days before Chinese President Xi Jinping's scheduled visit to the White House.

Eight-hour negotiation session

Bessent described the Sunday talks as "a very successful engagement with the Chinese on trade and AI" while speaking to reporters after the eight-hour-long discussions held at JPMorgan Chase's head office in New York.

China's chief negotiator Li Chenggang echoed the positive assessment, characterizing the atmosphere as "good" and telling reporters the session was "not bad".

The negotiation sets the stage for the upcoming Trump-Xi summit later this week, where the two leaders are expected to build on the progress made by their trade teams. Li Chenggang's role in the negotiations followed his recent promotion to international trade responsibilities.
