Under-Construction School Roof Collapses in Gwalior, Four Workers Injured
An under-construction section of the first-floor roof at a government school in Gwalior’s Kampoo area suddenly collapsed, injuring 4 workers.
An under-construction section of the first-floor roof at a government school in Gwalior’s Kampoo area suddenly collapsed, injuring 4 workers. The incident took place on the premises of the government Padmaraje Kanya Vidyalaya, where construction work is being carried out under the CM Rise School scheme.
All 4 injured workers were sent to a hospital for treatment. The injuries have been described as minor. The collapse caused panic at the school campus, and relief and rescue operations were started soon after information about the incident was received.
The incident occurred while the extension work for the CM Rise School was under way on the premises. A part of the roof of the under-construction building came down suddenly, leading to confusion and an emergency response at the site.
Kampoo police, the fire department of the Municipal Corporation and teams of the State Disaster Response Force, or SDRF, reached the spot. The teams began relief and rescue work and also started examining the circumstances that led to the collapse.
According to preliminary information, construction material in the form of a mixture was being lifted to the roof with the help of a pump. It is suspected that a large quantity of the mixture collected at one place on the roof. This may have placed additional weight on the structure, causing a section of it to collapse.
However, the actual reason for the accident will become clear only after the investigation is completed. The possibility of a technical problem in the construction, the effect of additional weight or a failure to follow safety standards is being examined.
Questions have also been raised over the functioning of the construction agency and the safety arrangements at the site. It has been alleged that workers were carrying out the work without adequate safety equipment and resources.
The allegation about the lack of safety arrangements has not, by itself, established the cause of the collapse. The investigation will determine whether safety standards were ignored during the work. If such a violation is confirmed, the issue of fixing responsibility on those connected with the construction work will also arise.
The police and SDRF teams continued to handle the situation at the site while the rescue operation and inspection were under way. The administration’s immediate priority was to ensure treatment for the injured workers and to rule out the possibility that any other person could be trapped under the debris.
The government Padmaraje Kanya Vidyalaya campus is located opposite Nehru Park in the Kampoo area. The collapse there has raised questions about the quality of construction work being carried out at government schools and the safety arrangements for workers.
The investigation will now establish whether the roof section fell because of a technical defect in the construction, the additional load created by the material placed on it, or a failure to follow safety standards. The construction agency is facing allegations of negligence in connection with the accident.
