Tom Skerritt, Alien and Top Gun Star, Dies at 93

Tom Skerritt died on Wednesday of natural causes, his family said in a statement, after a Hollywood career that spanned from the 1960s to the 2020s.

He was 93.

A career across genres

Known for his rugged good looks and ability to shine in many genres, Skerritt took on roles ranging from an army surgeon to a spaceship captain.

He starred in Hollywood megahits including the sci-fi classic Alien, the war comedy *M*A*S*H* and the action drama Top Gun.

His work across science fiction, war comedy and action drama reflected the versatility that defined his screen career.

Skerritt was a Detroit native whose acting career extended across several decades, from the 1960s through the 2020s.

“While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humour, curiosity, wisdom, generosity and the love he brought into our lives,” his family said.

They added that he “cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world, and helping others find and share their own voices.”
