Three arrested for celebratory gunfire during welcome ceremony in Ujjain

Three persons have been arrested by Ujjain police after a video of celebratory gunfire in Jhiranya village went viral on social media, with the accused now facing charges under multiple sections including the Arms Act.

The incident took place around two weeks ago in Jhiranya village in the Nagda area of Ujjain district during a welcome ceremony organized for the arrival of a Sheikh. Three individuals fired celebratory shots during the welcome procession that was taken out in the village on that occasion.

A video of the incident surfaced on social media showing the three men firing guns. In the footage, one of the youths was seen wearing a mask covering his face. The viral video showed the firing taking place amid a crowd, raising concerns about the possibility of a major mishap.

After the video came to light, the matter escalated and police swung into action. The police launched an investigation using the viral social media video as the basis for their inquiry. Two of the accused were arrested first by the police in the case. The masked accused was subsequently arrested late at night by police from Ratlam. With his arrest, all three accused involved in the case are now in police custody.

According to police, interrogation of the accused has revealed that the weapons used in the celebratory firing were valid licensed firearms. The police are also examining the licenses of the weapons and the documents related to them.

A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections along with sections of the Arms Act. The authorities have taken cognizance of the incident given the potential danger posed by such reckless firing in a crowded public gathering.

Hindu organizations had also met with police officials and demanded action against the accused in the matter. Questions had been raised about the risk of a major incident given that the firing was taking place in the midst of a crowd in the viral video.

At present, interrogation of all three accused is underway and police are investigating other aspects connected to the entire case.
