Teen gang-raped on Delhi sleeper bus, driver and conductor arrested

A 16-year-old student was allegedly gang-raped by a bus driver and conductor in a moving sleeper bus in Delhi, police said on Wednesday, raising fresh questions about the safety of women and minors in public transport.

The incident took place on the night of August 4 when the Class 11 student from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, lost her way in heavy rain and darkness and reached Pari Chowk in Greater Noida. Desperately seeking help, she flagged down a sleeper bus for assistance.

According to police, the bus driver and conductor offered to drop her at Noida Sector 63 and asked her to board the vehicle. Once inside, the two men allegedly raped her in the moving bus and threatened to kill her when she resisted. The ordeal continued as the bus traveled approximately 47 kilometers before reaching Kashmiri Gate, where the accused finally let her go.

The survivor immediately approached Kashmiri Gate police and reported the entire incident. Acting swiftly on her complaint, police arrested the bus driver, identified as Kuldeep, and the conductor, Sandeep. The bus has been seized and sent for forensic examination to gather evidence.

Authorities are currently investigating all aspects of the case. The incident has once again brought the issue of women's safety in public transport to the forefront, particularly for minors traveling alone. Delhi has witnessed several such disturbing cases over the years, sparking widespread outrage and demands for stricter safety measures and accountability in the public transportation system. The city's reputation continues to be marred by such crimes despite repeated promises of better security and surveillance in buses and other public vehicles.
