South China Morning Post Wins Five Gold, One Silver at Asian Media Awards

A photograph by senior photographer Sam Tsang won gold in the best news photography category at the World Association of News Publishers’ prestigious Asian Media Awards 2026 in Singapore. The win was part of six prizes for the South China Morning Post, including five gold and one silver. The newspaper also secured a clean sweep in the best news photography category.

Tsang’s winning image showed a man whose wife was trapped in last November’s Tai Po fire. A shot from last September by senior photographer Elson Li won silver in the same category. Li’s image showed a man sitting on a bench facing the sea amid Super Typhoon Ragasa.

The SCMP emerged as a big winner on Wednesday at the Asian Media Awards 2026. Its five gold and one silver recognized work in photojournalism, infographics, design and offerings for young readers. The prizes therefore covered visual journalism, information design, newspaper design and work aimed at young readers.

The best news photography results were led by Tsang’s gold and included Li’s silver. The six-prize haul also included recognition for the SCMP’s infographics, design and offerings for young readers. Together, the results made the newspaper a major winner at the awards in Singapore.
