Hong Kong authorities will strengthen traffic management at the revamped Huanggang Port after major congestion at the recently opened border crossing.
The measures follow traffic disruption linked to Halloween celebrations and crowds attending concerts at Kai Tak Stadium.
Authorities said the changes are intended to prevent a repeat of last weekend’s congestion and improve the movement of vehicles through the crossing.
A government spokesman said on Monday night that police would further strengthen road traffic control and management near Huanggang Port.
“Depending on traffic flow, they will implement contingency plans and open vehicle buffer zones as needed to effectively channel cross-boundary buses, private cars, and taxis, thereby accelerating the movement of all types of vehicles,” the spokesman said.
The proposed response includes contingency plans that can be activated according to traffic conditions.
Vehicle buffer zones will also be opened when needed to help manage the flow of cross-boundary buses, private cars and taxis.
The focus on traffic control reflects the pressure placed on the crossing by large crowds arriving after Halloween events and concerts.
The government’s stated aim is to channel different types of vehicles more effectively and reduce the risk of similar congestion during future events.
