Rath Yatra-Girjaghar ropeway trial runs begin in Varanasi

Trial runs for the ambitious Rath Yatra-Girjaghar ropeway project in Varanasi commenced on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards the launch of one of Asia's first urban transport ropeway services. The trials involve running gondolas on the ropeway to thoroughly evaluate its safety and technical capabilities.

According to officials, the testing process includes load assessments to examine every structural and technical aspect of the project. Any issues or shortcomings identified during the trials will be addressed immediately. This multi-phase testing ensures that all safety standards are met before the ropeway becomes operational for the public. Authorities emphasized that the trials are being conducted with international safety benchmarks in mind.

Spanning approximately 3.8 kilometers, the ropeway will connect Varanasi's Cantt railway station to Godowlia, a bustling area near the iconic Kashi Vishwanath temple. Intermediate stations will include Kashi Vidyapeeth and Rath Yatra, while Girjaghar will serve as a technical station. The entire network will operate through five stations and 29 towers, offering a modern and efficient travel option in the city.

During the trials, each gondola is being tested with weights equivalent to 10 passengers, totaling 800 kilograms, along with an additional 10 percent load, bringing the total to 880 kilograms. This rigorous testing aims to ensure the reliability and safety of the system under real-world conditions.

The project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in Varanasi, especially in areas around Godowlia, which often witness heavy footfall due to religious tourism. Once operational, the ropeway will provide a faster and more convenient mode of transport for residents and visitors alike, further enhancing the city's infrastructure.
